The Nutcracker

For many of us, The Nutcracker is a winter season and holiday staple, and it may have also been the first ballet we ever saw. And for a smaller subset, this may have been one of the first ballets we have ever been a part of. The Nutcracker is a ballet classic, and one of the few that few springs to mind when we think of ballet. Even if you've never seen the ballet, you probably recognize some of its music, especially around the Christmas season; even the opening of Princess Tutu ends with some of the most recognizable parts of the "Dance of the Sugar Fairy" playing.

With the year coming to a close, we've decided to draw inspiration from this familiar ballet. The Nutcracker, a loose adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman's The Nutcracker and the Rat King, tells the story of a magic night when the young girl Clara witnesses her toys battling the Mouse King, led by the titular Nutcracker, and is then taken to the candy-filled land of the toys. It has been a source of inspiration and wonder for more than 100 years. Your challenge is to draw inspiration from the story, the ballet, or any of the various adaptations to feature the characters from Princess Tutu. So long as it features The Nutcracker in a prominent way, you have free range.

Deadline: Nov. 27, 2015, 11 p.m. PST (GMT -8)

Things to keep in mind:
:bulletred: Your entry must draw upon The Nutcracker ballet or the E.T.A. Hoffman story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. You may choose to use any adaptation of the respective works.
:bulletblack: Only canon characters from Princess Tutu may be used.

To Enter:
:bulletpink: Both fan art & fan fiction are accepted.
:bulletgreen: Only entries that adhere to the rules set in the contest prompt will be accepted.

I hope to have time to do something for this month's contest. But, I have an older piece that's been posted elsewhere (never on dA) that would fit as well. Would it be permissible to enter it, or (as I've assumed all along) must all entries be new, as part of the challenge to finish them within the allotted time? Just checking....

We prefer pieces that are created for the prompt, or around the time of the prompt. It's part of the whole challenge aspect of our contests. So it's a no on pre-existing art. But feel free to submit it to the main gallery.

That's what I thought, but I didn't remember seeing a rule to that effect. Thanks for clarifying that!

Yeah, it's rarely posted in the specific contests, but it's in the general contest rules in the About Us page.

Don`t you think about making Princess Tutu OC contest? Agiotage would be enormous =)

It has crossed my mind personally, but we tend to try to keep things in line with the overall theme of the club, which is focused on the canon characters. We've allowed a few instances for OCs, like the families contest we held a while back. Having an OC focused contest is an option, but something the admins would have to agree on. If there were demand for it, maybe.
